My kitty’s name was Mawatha. I would love to win a Lord of the Pets custom pet portrait of her which I would proudly hang in my bedroom.
Mawatha, meaning “street” or “road” in Sinhalese, and I met when she was a sick, lost, 3-week-old kitten stumbling alone in the middle of a lane in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I knew nothing about cats, less about kittens, but I could not leave this little creature in the road to be crushed by cars as so many are in that city. Once in my home, we bonded quickly and she never left. She taught me how to be a Cat Mama, and I tried to help her learn to “cat” in the absence of her biological mom and kindle.
Mawatha and I lived a good life together. We understood each other well; we learned to communicate well. The latter was important to me because I knew that Mawatha was a captive in my home. I would have loved to have let her roam free, but a human city is nowhere for a kitty to exist. If she was captive, I felt that the least I could do was to try to make her feel understood.
In addition, I discovered that Mawatha was disabled: she had a balance problem and could only jump short distances. We learned to use a leash and harness so that I could give Mawatha a safe taste of the outdoors, get her paws literally on the ground and get a good dose of grounding. Because she couldn’t jump like a normal cat, our deck became a catio and Mawatha spent hours there in the warm weather, watching and listening to the birds, squirrels and chipmunks, feeling the warm sun on her fur and nose. In the winter, I made a snow maze on the deck for her amusement.
Mawatha was my Soul Kitty and I looked forward to us spending retirement together, at least for a number of years. I thought that I could have her for 18 or maybe 20 years — some kitties live longer. However, one year into my retirement, Mawatha was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis. I did everything that I could to save her, again, but it was not to be. The hospital staff were confused because, as the vet said, she’s not getting better, but she is not showing that she is ready to leave. I did not want Mawatha to leave me nor, it seemed, did she want to go. She fought so hard to stay. We were to turn 65 the same year, in human and kitty years, respectively.
Mawatha came into my life unexpectedly, and she also left unexpectedly (it is not usual for adult cats to develop FIP.) She was a very special kitty in so many ways. We had a good life together. We were so comfortable together. We had really gotten into our “groove” and I was looking forward to many more years together. Her loss was, and remains, a great shock to my heart.
The thing that Mawatha loved the most was bedtime. If I was slow getting ready for bed, she would call to me to hurry up. When we got into bed, she would do her ritual kneading and purring before curling up to sleep. The bedtime ritual seemed to bring her great comfort. For this reason, I would want to hang Mawatha’s portrait in my bedroom, the place where my Soul Kitty felt the safest and the closest to me.
My cats Franklin, Maggie, Ruby and I would love to win a Lord of the Pets custom pet portrait which I would proudly hang in the cat room.
My cats name is Huckleberry, and we would love to win a Lord of the Pets custom pet portrait! I would hang it proudly in my living room, for all to admire!
