Introducing a delightful new cat mystery just out from Holiday House Books called Ra the Mighty. A royal cat and his sidekick track a jewelry thief in this funny new series. Chock full of witty writing and zany illustrations, it asks the age old question … can a lazy cat and a dung-obsessed beetle crack a mystery? >^..^<
Ra relishes his role as Pharaoh’s beloved — and outrageously spoiled — cat. The only mystery that interests him is when his next snack will arrive. But when a priceless amulet goes missing from the palace, and a young servant girl is falsely blamed for the theft, Ra’s hardworking scarab-beetle buddy, Khepri, insists that they must save her.
Can Ra and Khepri solve the crime? This comically mismatched duo is on the case! Our tuxie (Newman – below right) was mesmerized when we read it to him.
Once Ra gets going, he decides that being a Great Detective isn’t so bad; he certainly doesn’t mind being hailed as “Protector of the Weak and Defender of Justice.”
Here’s what the critics are saying:
“The exciting ancient setting, as well as the characters’ idiosyncratic personalities and their delightful repartee, will appeal to young readers. Fast-paced adventure with a lot of charm.” — Kirkus Reviews
“A charming page-turner of a mystery; recommend to cat lovers and young Egyptologists.” — School Library Journal
“With more twists and turns than a mummy’s maze, Ra The Mighty: Cat Detective is a mystery that you can really sink your claws into.” — Mo O’Hara, author of the My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish series.

My cat’s name is Toby, and if he was a detective his special skill to solve a mystery would be his obsession with plastic and foil wrappers —everyday items that are oftentimes overlooked at crime scenes, But if a hangry perp left a candy wrapper behind, for instance, Toby would pounce. And from there, it’d be easy to match traces of chocolate on a criminal’s hands & face that carelessly discarded evidence.
My cat’s name is Zahara, and if she were a detective her special skill to solve a mystery would be pouncing on whatever wiggles cloth – woe to the perpetrator trying to hide behind floor-length curtains, under the bedskirt, or in the laundry hamper!
My cat’s name is Booger, and if he were a detective his special skill to solve a mystery would be to sniff it out, pounce on it, play with it, chewing on it to be certain he was correct about it… and then drown it in his water bowl, after which he would announce it loudly to all who will listen, expecting accolades for his story. Or he might just nap through the whole thing.
When I was about 11 yrs old my grandma had a cat named Booger also.
😊
