Did you hear about the lawyer who brought his cat to work?
The judge yelled “Odor in the court”.
There are plenty of foul smelling things in the world, and while cat urine probably doesn’t rank near the top of the list, it is still definitely something you want to avoid. The reason why the smell of cat urine can be so overpowering comes from the way cats are built.
First, cats are, by nature, territorial and use their urine to mark their territories. Their pee contains enzymes and ammonia that clearly mark their territory, especially to other cats seeking to intrude. The smell of these enzymes and bacteria are all the more noticeable to the feline sense of smell, to serve as a reminder of the boundaries of their territory.
Unfortunately, the odor isn’t confined to the feline sense of smell and thus never fails to remind us that there is indeed a cat in the house. Cats conserve a lot of energy and so they spend much of their time sleeping. This makes their urine highly concentrated, and thus much more pungent which contributes to the foulness and strong smell.
Kitty litter boxes may be filled with a variety of materials, ranging from silicon crystals to sawdust and these materials absorb the urine and make the cat urine smell somewhat more tolerable for the cat owner. Still, some cat owners find themselves pulling out their hair at stubborn cats that manage to completely ignore their litter boxes. The result is a house that reeks of cat urine smell. And for someone who owns a territorial kitty, going around on ones hands and knees trying to locate the problem is a less than pleasant experience. Cleaning the pee is an even worse experience as is getting rid of the pungent smell.
Cat pee smell is definitely not something a pet owner wants. Rather, it actually poses a strain on the pet owners relationship with his cat, as the owner often mistakes his pets misdeed as a mere sign of lack of discipline. In line with this, it is important to understand the precise reason for your cats behavior. To learn more about the behavioral side of dealing with cats not using their litter box, have a look at one of our earlier posts called: Cats Not Using the Litter Box
The truth is that you don’t have to have a smelly cat to end up with litter box odors and not cleaning the cat litter box frequently can actually allow the odors to worsen over time. Cat urine is very concentrated and corrosive as it releases ammonia and mercatan, which are similar odors, associated with skunk spray.

We hear from our readers regularly about their struggles they have in dealing with cat pee smell, so we decided to test out a product called OdorKlenz that had very good reviews for cat urine odor removal. OdorKlenz Pet Products are made from natural minerals and contain no harsh chemicals, masking agents, or fragrances making it an ideal choice for safe and effective removal of pet odors from your home, pet, furniture, vehicle, clothing, and indoor air space.
We spoke with OdorKlenz and they were kind enough to send us the following 3 products for our own review: Absorbent Granules, Pet Litter Additive and Pet Urine Eliminator. Our Cuddle Clones plush doll (below) was the only kitty co-operative enough to hold still for this photo.
1. Absorbent Granules
OdorKlenz Absorbent Granules are perfect for cleaning up liquid mishaps that you might meet throughout the day. The super absorbent granules not only soak up the mess so it’s easier to clean, but it uses the OdorKlenz patented earth mineral technology to eliminate the odors at the source.
Great for treating liquid messes, including urine, vomit, diarrhea, household chemical spills, blood, garbage spill, and food spills. We quite liked the story line from the OdorKlenz website (below):
Now you’ve got an adorable new pet running around and you’re thinking “This isn’t too bad”. But then they stop dead in their tracks and have an accident all over your floor. The carpeting and flooring in your home often fall victim to pet accidents that need to be tended to quickly. Traditional pet & urine eliminators are designed to focus on one aspect of the urine odor, often just masking it with perfumes and fragrances. OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator is different as it neutralizes the odor at the source.
You begin to panic. But then you remember that you have a canister of OdorKlenz Absorbent Granules in your cupboard. You pour some on the mess and the smell is immediately gone. After sweeping the product up, you have barely lost any time or patience to play with your new four-legged friend.
It’s so simple to use, just…
- Locate the source of odor whether it be a urine stain, vomit, or diarrhea,etc..
- Sprinkle OdorKlenz Absorbent on the affected area and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Sweep or vacuum up the excess waste.
This product is a must have for pet owners, but also great for use in bars, restaurants, veterinary offices, day cares, and transportation companies for safe and easy clean-up.
2. Pet Litter Additive
OdorKlenz Pet Litter Additive enhances your existing kitty litter. Just scoop or sprinkle some of the litter odor elimination formulation right on top of the litter box to extend the time until the next change or even mix it in when you change the litter. OdorKlenz Pet Litter additive works immediately to remove litter box odors on existing litter without the use of harsh chemicals or fragrances.
3. Pet Urine Eliminator
OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator can be used on water-safe surfaces and is designed for use on carpets, fabrics and other extractable surfaces your pet frequent. It destroys odors deep down, eliminating stubborn pet & urine odors at the source. OdorKlenz Pet Urine Eliminator is a specially formulated product to provide maximum neutralization and urine odor extraction by capturing, destroying, and eliminating urine odors safely and effectively.

THE VERDICT
We’ve used all three of the products and all delivered exactly as promised. To be fair we didn’t have an accident caused by our cats, but had the opportunity to bring the granules over to a friend who has a new puppy that still pees on their floors/carpets. They were so happy with the granules that they asked to keep them…we reluctantly agreed. Let’s hope our cats keep using their litter boxes.
We regularly clean our litter boxes (2x/day) and they don’t tend to smell but at times when the cats are synced up to pee at the same time there can be a definite odor. We’ve been sprinkling the litter additive in their boxes and must say it completely got rid of any smell. We’re not kitten…it really does work!
As for the pet urine eliminator…again, usage was tested on the puppy (above) who pee’d on the carpet. The product worked beautifully. No stain. No smell. No more worry.
The Prognosis:
- Are these products effective? Yes.
- Are they easy to use? Yes.
- Did they deliver as promised? Yes.
- Did they clean out the litter box so we wouldn’t have to? No…but that’s not their promise. >^..^<
- Would we recommend getting these products to keep in your home if you have pets? Yes.
Our Purrington Post score for the OdorKlenz trio of products (above) came in at a solid 4.5 /5.0 (FYI – we never give a 5.0 rating…nothing is purrfect…except of course cats!).
Now for some really good news…want to try them for yourself? The kind folks at OdorKlenz have offered us 5 ‘Home Kits’ each containing the 3 products above to be raffled off to 5 lucky Purrington Post readers! This smells like a great deal!

Trudy says we need to have Odorclenz because she shares her bathroom with her stinky brother. It’s bad enough to have to share a bathroom with a “boy” and even worse when you share it with one who has smelly poops. No self-respecting female should have to live like that and Trudy hates her brother even more because of it. Please bring some peace to our family and help us control our little “stinker’s” smelly poopys.
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because…
Pookie, Sugar Bear, Boo Bear, Rascal, Princess, Dolly, Spice say with all the recent fosters we have had coming through OUR house lately from the local rescue, our mama has been finding places where we have stress marked and sprayed our territory.
She even found some on areas she never though we could get to – inside cabinets and drawers.
And she found some on her combat boots. So now she needs to do quite a bit of cleaning and wiping with something that really works to get rid of the stains and the smell AND to keep those nice new wood laminate floors clean and pretty.
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because…they share our house with dogs and guinea pigs so we need all the help we can get controlling the odors around here!

My cat , Tiki knows that we need odor klenz because every time she vomits , she always hits the carpet never the bare floors. And she never hides her pee in the litter box
We need OdorKlenz in our home because we have been rescuing cats and dogs for several years numbering in the hundreds. We have 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 foster, bottlefed kittens and another kitty that was adopted and returned because of pee mistakes. Way too many pets for one household , but we love them all. When we find the right forever home for one of our babies, there are always more to take their place.
My cat thinks we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because one of his favorite mid-day snacks is asparagus, which leaves an undesirable odor in his litter box.
My Princess Poo Poo thinks we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because she pees on her mommys head and bed when her mommy is sleeping. When mommy shuts the door to shut her out she pees at the door. She must mark her mommy because she belongs to her and all her clothes and stuff because they belong to her too. She is so cute she cant be given discipline in anyway when she looks at her mommy when mommy finds out her big eyes say who me and her mommy heart melts.
My cats Lucy and Henry think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because Lucy likes to think, and pee, outside the box.
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because the youngest (Duchess) likes to have the sofa to herself, so pees and poops on it from time to time… Now mommy and the other cats won’t Sit on it. I also like to pee in moments clean, freshly washed clothes in the hamper when she yells at me. I am a brat cat!!!!
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because they stink and I am always having to clean their boxes.
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because they read the book “I Can Pee on That” and they have been practicing all over the house. I’ve had to throw out more pillows than I care to count and I don’t know if I’ll ever get the pee smell out of the heating vent. Help OdorKlenz, please.
My kitties think we need OdorKlenz, because with thirteen rescues, there are always going to be accidents. They think OdorKlenz would help mommy clean the accidents, and keep the house smelling fresh and clean. The kitties also think it will help keep their home healthy for them and mommy.

My four cats are being threatened with becoming homeless because they have had a couple of accidents. My partner says they will have to go. Please help!
My cats, Aspen, Coco & Mercy-Mercy think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because someone “all three cats deny it’s them” is peeing/pooping outside of the 5 litter boxes. The human husband of the house hates cats. We must find out who’s peeing on the floor. In the mean time, OdorKlenz will help save more than 9 lives at our house because it will prevent the human husband of being constantly reminded about the cat urine smell in the house. Please pick us! Lots of head butts & purrrssss, Aspen, Coco, Mercy-Mercy.
My 4 cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because they can be awful smelly when you have 4 cats using the litter box everyday.
My cats think we need odor Klenz because there are 13 of us & aunt rhonda won’t visit anymore because we make the house stink tooo much
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz because……well, there are 26 (yes, you read that right!!) of them and they can make a LOT of bad smells. Give this Cat Mom a break from cleaning…Pleeeeease!!!
Two out of my three cats think we need to have OdorKlenz ( one doesn’t care because he likes to be stinky and not cover his pee or poop in the box) because they all like to go potty in the same box and one after each other even though we have three!
The smell can hit you very fast especially when one of them decides the others can cover his mess up
My old fat cat gets infections a couple of times a year and has some accidents while the medicine kicks in, looking for something way better than vinegar and baking soda.
Rossi and Oakley say thanks for the chance, Weasley says whatever 😻
My cats Inky and Toots think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because… Inky leaves very stinky poos in some inappropriate places. Tootsie says it’s because Inky is an old lady.
My cat(s) think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because Daphne (the youngest of nine cats, they always blame it on the baby) makes a mess in and around the litter box and she makes it look bad for the rest of us!
Face it – boys stink! Our brothers Eben and Snooch love to try to tell the world they are top cats by marking mom and dad’s stuff. Honestly, they should realize by now that no matter how much they piss about, it’s the ladies who are the real rulers. We use our boxes and like them clean and fresh.- the fresher the better. A dirty bathroom is simply the worst. Please help us keep the peace and the pee. – Empress Toffee the First Birdmuncher and her court of torties
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because…
When the weather outside is frightful, we’d like the inside to be totally delightful. Right now mom says it stinks to high heavens because the number of kitties using the litter boxes between permanent and fosters is in the double digits at the moment.
Mom would like to walk in the door and not get “stank face”.
My cats think we need to have OdorKlenz at our house because we have 3 litter boxes and 3 cats. Enough said!
hi i have to say your post was so useful and the name of your site made me smile 🙂 spot on the purrington post reminds me of the huffington post 🙂
As i always feel pity for Kittens which abandoned on the street and bring them home, give them a warm big box place with pillow, food and water – but i never allowed any Kittens or Cats entering my house. They will stay (if they want) in my frontyard’s patio. Their urine is so stink and their poo just as the same as a human’s diarrhea faeces. Some Kittens even STILL smell like urine even i bathed them (some of them have fleas so i help to get rid of the parasite). Its so different if i must compared with Dog. Aside from Dog is so easy to train to pee and poo in the bathroom or outside from very young age (7 weeks of Puppies toilet trained easily compared with 7 weeks of Kittens), Dog’s urine and poo have so less odor – even lesser compared with human’s baby wastes. That’s why Dog is the only one mammal that could living inside my house – aside from another human.
